We want everyone working with the Royal Court to have the best possible experience. However, we know sometimes things go wrong - and it’s often those here for shorter periods of time who experience this most and find it hardest to access support.

If you're a freelancer at the Royal Court and want to talk to us or raise any issue, we want to hear from you - and to ensure things are improved for the future.

If something goes wrong

If something goes wrong in your time freelancing with us, there are lots of options avaialble. We will work with you to identify how it can be put right, what lessons can be learned, and whether a formal process is required.

This could include:

  1. Informal resolution with those involved and a manager or lead contact. Many concerns and complaints can be handled informally, and this can often provide the most positive, productive and immediate outcome.
  2. Raising a formal complaint or concern personally. Your first point of call should be your primary or senior contact at the Royal Court. That could be your stage manager, company manager, producer, or the department head or staff member managing your project, who will talk to you about the next appropriate steps.
  3. Where necessary, reporting issues outside these structures to our Head of People, senior management or leadership team. This includes our Confidential Online Reporting Form (see below).

Please note: if you are a member of the public rather than a freelancer working with us, please do not use the information on this page and instead follow our Public Complaints Policy.

Online reporting form

We know that freelancers especially can find it hard to know where to go when they need to raise something difficult. If you have exhausted informal and/or direct channels, you can always ask to speak directly to someone else higher up in the organisation, including our Head of People or leadership team.

If you don't feel there is anyone you can approach directly, we provide a confidential Online Reporting Form, available for anyone working with us. These reports will go directly to our Executive Director and Head of People, outside of our wider management structure and including options for anonymous reporting.

A last resort: reporting directly to our board

If you have exhausted all the options above and need to raise a matter of utmost seriousness, such as significant issues with our Executive leadership and for which no other path can be explored, you can contact our Chair directly on chair [at] royalcourttheatre.com. They will assess how and where this complaint is best handled, discussing this with you. If your complaint falls short of requiring the trustees of the organisation, they may pass it back to a member of executive team, people department or line management staff as appropriate
