Peter Gill, 1939 – 2026

Today the English Stage Company marks the legacy of a major writer and director, and a great discoverer and champion of new theatre talent. 

Peter Gill arrived in Sloane Square as a teenager auditioning for small parts, and across six decades played a leading role in shaping modern British theatre.

Directing over a hundred productions across his career, his own plays include SMALL CHANGE (1976) and THE YORK REALIST (2001), both playing at the Royal Court and considered modern classics.

Peter started as an understudy at the Court, before becoming an Assistant Director in 1964. Within a year, he was writing and directing his first productions. He made his playwriting debut with THE SLEEPERS’ DEN, drawing on his working-class Cardiff boyhood. His directorial debut was D.H. Lawrence’s previously lost play A COLLIER’S FRIDAY NIGHT.

Lawrence’s plays had been largely ignored and unperformed during his lifetime, due to their working-class dialect. At the Court, Peter unearthed and championed them, moving on to THE DAUGHTER-IN-LAW (premiered in 1967, originally written in 1913) before the landmark 1968 D.H. Lawrence season saw Gill combine those first two plays with THE WIDOWING OF MRS HOLROYD in one of the most critically successful seasons of the decade. Asked about audience responses to these working-class East Midlands stories, Peter said: ‘It was sort of an astonishment. People couldn’t bear it, they cried so much.’

Class, and a deep sense of dignity and humanity, ran through all of Peter’s work, infusing both his directing and writing. As Associate Director, he founded the Royal Court Young Writers’ Group in 1969, whose spirit lives on in our work nurturing successive generations of playwrights.

Despite his huge impact at the Court, his time here was just a warm-up for what was to come. Peter became founding Artistic Director of Riverside Studios in 1976, establishing it as one of British theatre’s leading spaces. In 1980, he joined the National Theatre as Associate Director, staying for 17 years and becoming the founding Director of the NT Studio.

His legacy cannot be overstated.
