We offer a year-round programme of accessible performances designed to welcome d/Deaf, disabled, neurodivergent audiences and anyone who benefits from a more flexible experience at the theatre.

Our performance types include captioned, BSL-interpreted, audio-described, relaxed and chilled formats - all with dedicated support in place. We also offer regular Babes-in-Arms and Age UK performances for shows in the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs. Find out what to expect from our access performances:

More Information

Captioned Performances

Captioned performances display text on screens, showing dialogue and sound effects in real time - ideal for d/Deaf and hard of hearing audience members, as well as those who are neurodivergent or speak English as a second language.

  • Caption screens are visible from specific seats only - marked CC on the seat map at checkout
  • Captioned shows are preceded by a Familiarisation Tour (30 mins before curtain), to help you get used to the auditorium, layout, and screen placement
BSL

These performances have a British sign language interpretation delivered from the stage.

Audio Description

Audio-described performances include a live commentary describing key visual elements on stage, available through a personal headset.

  • Touch Tours take place 90 minutes before the show – offering a hands-on introduction to the set, costumes, and space
  • Audio notes are also provided in advance
Chilled

Chilled performances are designed to support audience members who may benefit from a more flexible theatre environment - including those with anxiety, sensory sensitivities, or other access needs.

What to expect:

  • You can move around or leave and re-enter the auditorium as needed
  • A relaxed approach to sound and movement in the space
  • A live stream of the show is available in a quiet viewing room nearby
  • Staff can help you find the best seats for your needs
Relaxed

These performances include technical changes (e.g. lighting and sound adjustments) to create a more sensory-friendly experience.

  • Audience members are free to move, make noise, and leave or re-enter
  • A chill-out space and screen relay are available outside the auditorium
  • Designed for those with sensory sensitivities, neurodivergence, or complex needs
Age UK

These shows are designed to be welcoming to older audiences, in partnership with Age UK. All Age UK performances are also captioned

Babes in Arms

These performances are specifically for adults attending with babies under 12 months.

We understand that babies make noise, need feeding, changing and moving around - and we welcome that.

What to expect:

  • Relaxed seating and support to find the right spot
  • Freedom to respond to your baby however you need
  • You’re welcome to enter and leave the auditorium at any time
  • A live stream is available in a quieter space outside the theatre if needed
