The Royal Court, in collaboration with the British Council, has been working with young writers in Nigeria during the last two years. This project has been led by playwright Leo Butler, directors Ramin Gray, Clare Lizzimore and Hettie Macdonald, and Royal Court Associate Director Elyse Dodgson.
Five playwrights (Lekan Balogun, Adebusola Elegbede, Iweha Iheanacho, Kunle Okesipe and Ozi Okoli) have been invited to London for a week to work with British actors and directors on new plays.
The culmination of this week will be a presentation of extracts from the plays developed. This will be followed by a panel discussion about the impact of new writing for the theatre in Nigeria today, which will also look at the work in relation to what is considered to be an explosion of ‘third generation’ British-Nigerian playwrights in the UK. Director Femi Elufowuju, jr is the consultant on this discussion.
