Leon Rothenberg is a Tony award-winning sound designer who has designed sound and written music for theater, film, dance, Virtual Reality, immersive environments and the circus. Designs on Broadway include the upcoming Boys In The Band, A Doll’s House Part 2, Violet, The Realistic Joneses and The Nance, for which he won the Tony Award for Best Sound Design of a Play; The Heiress and Joe Turner’s Come and Gone for which he was nominated for a Tony. Other work includes sound design for the national tour of Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story Onstage, the Encores: Off Center Summer Series at New York City Center and sound design for virtual reality games and experience seen at Sundance and Tribeca Film Festivals.   Regionally he has worked at theaters such as The Geffen Playhouse, Pasadena Playhouse, Spoleto Festival, the Huntington, Portland Center Stage, Arena Stage, Seattle Rep, La Jolla Playhouse, Old Globe, Folger Shakespeare Library, Long Wharf, McCarter, Merrimack Repertory Theater and  Williamstown Theater Festival.

He designed sound for Cirque du Soleil’s Kooza, currently touring the world, and Wintuk, Cirque’s winter holiday show in New York City. Other work includes live sound design for the upcoming Netflix series Naked and Evolution, an immersive theme park experience in Shenzhen, China.

Leon serves on the Theater faculty at California Institute of the Arts. He has also taught at NYU Tisch School of the Arts and Bennington College. He holds an M.F.A. from California Institute of the Arts, a B.M. in Music Composition from Oberlin Conservatory, and a B.A. in Computer Science from Oberlin College.
