The Writers' Card - it starts here

The Writers’ Card is an offer, an invitation, and a promise for theatre writers at every stage of their careers.

It’s an offer: to share the resources of the Royal Court with playwrights who want a professional home. It’s an invitation: to join us, with exclusive access and benefits for our artistic community. And it’s a promise: to stand by our commitment to new talent and defending the values of bold, ambitious writing.

All free to join for any writer who wants to be part of our next steps.

Members’ Newsletter

On sign-up, Writers’ Card Members join a dedicated mailing list, a direct line of communication with our playwriting community.

The newsletter is the first place we’ll share announcements and advertise opportunities – including special events, secret booking links, discounts, application call-outs and funding.

Browse the full current list of Writers’ Card Member events & opportunities and ways to use our building.

Exclusive access, events and opportunities

The Writers’ Card programme spans a host of regular events and ways to engage with us – and with fellow-playwrights. From monthly career surgeries, writers’ canteens and writers’ nights at shows, to live events, discussions, debates and podcast recordings, in-person gatherings and zoom happenings.

Alongside, Members have year-round, every-day access to the resources of our building. Whether you need writing or meeting space, a discount cuppa (or something stronger), access to our reference library of plays and theatre books, to use a printer (for free) or help tackling distractions and procrastination, we’re ready to welcome you in.

Benefits & discounts

Writers’ Card members get the best deal going at the Royal Court.

When writers join, they’ll get a digital membership card and ID number, available on a phone via email or in a digital wallet – accessing a wealth of benefits, including:

  • Exclusive Writers’ Card Menu at our Bar & Kitchen, including £1 coffee, tea and soft drinks.
  • Career Surgeries with free coffee, Writers’ Nights with free drinks, £5 Writers’ Canteens and year-round free events.
  • Access to funding, including our new Writers’ Card lottery for paid writing weeks and first-look at all new opportunities.
  • Option to buy half price Friends Scheme Membership gaining year-round advance access to £15 Monday tickets. This will be available to purchase after our new season announcement – more information to come in a Writers’ Card newsletter.
  • Partner discounts, including 10% off all playtext purchases from Concord Theatricals’ online shop. Information on how to redeem this will be in your welcome email.

How to join

Joining couldn’t be easier – and did we mention it’s completely free?

Anyone can join, regardless of where they’re based, career stage or background, so long as they share our commitment and ambition for playwriting. We also welcome international writers, especially if seeking a theatrical home-away-from-home in the UK.

Finally, we’d ask everyone joining to read our Code of Conduct, the shared commitment we offer for everyone working at or with the Royal Court.
