Hangmen by Martin McDonagh nominated in five categories for the 2022 Tony Awards

Published on Mon 9 May 2022

Martin McDonagh’s Hangmen, a Royal Court Theatre/Atlantic Theater Company production currently showing on Broadway at the Golden Theatre, has been nominated for five Tony Awards: Best Play, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for David Threlfall, Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play for Alfie Allen, Best Scenic Design of a Play for Anna Fleischle, and Best Lighting Design of a Play for Joshua Carr.

Hangmen originally ran in the Royal Court Jerwood Theatre Downstairs 10 September – 10 October 2015. It transferred to Wyndham’s Theatre on the West End 1 December 2015 – 5 March 2016. It made its US premiere at Off-Broadway’s Atlantic Theater Company on 18 January 2018, where it had a sold-out run through to 7 March 2018. It won the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Foreign Play. Hangmen began Broadway performances 28 February 2020, playing 13 previews at the Golden Theatre until all Broadway productions were suspended on 12 March 2020. It then resumed its Broadway shows for a limited 10-week run on Friday 8 April 2022.

The play won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play and Best Set Design in 2016. It also won awards for Best Play and Best Designer at the Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards 2015 and Best Design at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards 2015.

Commenting on the nominations, Martin McDonagh said;

“I’m thrilled with the nominations for the play and for every single person involved in it, and looking forward to the big day in June.”

David Threlfall (Harry) said;

“I love this town, and I love the theatre community here. Everyone is just really, really welcoming. It was a bit of a shock. And a nice shock, of course. To come back and do theatre in New York City, it’s something about the place and people say ‘oh, it’s just because it’s different to the UK.’ To be named along some of the people I know, and some I don’t, that is enough. That will do. Anything else really, it will be what it will be, and that’s fine. But it’s really great to be here.”

Alfie Allen (Mooney) said;

“I am in the best version of shock imaginable this morning.  Being a part of the Hangmen ensemble has just been a phenomenal experience and I share this nomination with all of the cast with whom I share the stage each night.  The role of Mooney is written by the brilliant Martin McDonagh with so many layers, and I am so grateful to both Martin and Matthew Dunster for guiding my performance with such grace and skill.  I know this year has been full of challenges and it gives me so much pride to be part of the returning season of Broadway shows after what was far too long a hiatus.  I’m so grateful to be recognized by the American Theater Wing and the Broadway League this morning.  What a day!”

The winners for the 2022 Tony Awards will be announced at the ceremony on 12th June 2022.
