JULIAN BARRATT CAST IN LUCY KIRKWOOD’S NSFW

Mighty Boosh star Julian Barratt will play the editor of lad’s mag Doghouse in Lucy Kirkwood’s new play at the Royal Court Theatre, NSFW about the distorted world of today’s media industry.

NSFW, which stands for ‘Not Safe For Work’ and refers to online material the viewer may not want to be seen accessing in public, opens on 25 October (press night 31 October) in the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs.

Julian Barratt joins the previously announced cast of Janie Dee, Sacha Dhawan, Kevin Doyle, Henry Lloyd-Hughes and Esther Smith.

Carrie’s getting them out for the lads. Charlotte’s just grateful to have a job, Sam’s being asked to sell more than his body and Aidan’s trying to keep Doghouse from going under.

Money, sex and photo-shop. Lucy Kirkwood’s sharp new comedy looks at power games and privacy in the media and beyond.

Julian Barratt’s theatre credits include The Government Inspector at the Young Vic. He is best known for playing Howard Moon in cult show The Mighty Boosh which he co-wrote with Noel Fielding. After starting at the Edinburgh Fringe in 1998, the show went on to win a Perrier Best Newcomer Award went on to a hit Radio 4 series, winning the Douglas Adams Award for Innovative Comedy Writing, a BBC TV show and live show. It won four NME Awards; three for Best TV Show and one for Best Live Show. Other TV includes Nathan Barley, Penelope Princess of Pets and Garth Marenghi’s Dark Place on Channel 4. His films include Bunny and the Bull, Lucky Break short film Sweet and recently directed short film Curtains.

NSFW is Lucy Kirkwood’s Royal Court debut. Her credits include Beauty and the Beast co-devised with Katie Mitchell (National Theatre), and Small Hours, co-written with Ed Hime, directed by Katie Mitchell (Hampstead Theatre Downstairs), Tinderbox (Bush Theatre), Hedda (Gate Theatre). Psychogeography (Bush Theatre) and it felt empty when the heart went at first but it is alright now (Arcola Theatre) produced by Clean Break, where she is now on the board. It was nominated for an Evening Standard and Susan Smith Blackburn award, and made Lucy joint winner of the John Whiting Award 2010. Lucy has written for Skins on Channel 4 . Her series The Smoke, will be produced by Kudos and Sky next year and her adaptation of Hansel and Gretel, devised with Katie Mitchell will be at the National Theatre in December.

Simon Godwin will direct. Associate Director at the Royal Court, his credits include The Witness by Vivienne Franzmann, Luke Norris’ Goodbye to All That, Anya Reiss’ The Acid Test, and Nick Payne’s Wanderlust. His other credits include A Kind of Alaska and Krapp’s Last Tape, Faith Healer and Far Away at Bristol Old Vic, The Winter’s Tale for Headlong and the Nuffield Theatre Southampton, Mister Heracles at the West Yorkshire Playhouse. As Associate Director of the Royal and Derngate Theatres in Northampton under Artistic Director Rupert Goold, Simon directed seven main stage shows.
