katzenmusik (German, n.) caterwaul; a shrill howling or wailing noise (of a cat)
A viral video, a company capitalising on fear, prank calls, class divide and a cat memorial.
The residents of Burnside Town find themselves shrouded in distrust and anger. Can the damage ever be reversed?
“Sometimes I think it’s enough to just know that you could. To just stand here and know that you could. If you wanted to.”
katzenmusik is the latest play by young playwright Tom Fowler who returns to the Royal Court after Open Court 2016, our summer festival of new writing created by and for young people. The play is co-directed by Young Court Manager Romana Flello and Royal Court Artistic Associate Chris Sonnex.
Commenting on the play Young Court Manager Romana Flello said:
“The Royal Court youth theatre is our first youth theatre for twenty years. As Young Court’s aim is to provide youth led work, placing young people at the heart of the building and to be given autonomy it felt right that the youth theatre was the epitome of this.
The play has been written by Tom Fowler, who was a young writer on Open Court 2016. Our Youth Board are working in each department to realise the play and the creative team is made up of designers, a movement director and composer beginning their journeys in theatre.
The youth theatre have been working on katzenmusik since March, developing the play and stories with Tom and the team. The group is entirely inclusive and made up of young people from all over London, both neurotypical and with additional needs, they have come to us through organisations and projects we have worked with over the last two years.
This project is a culmination of the work of Young Court for the last two years and brings all of our avenues together to create progressive paths for the theatre makers of the future.”
