Royal Court wins three Olivier Awards

The Royal Court Theatre has received three accolades in the 2011 Olivier Awards in a ceremony last night (Sunday 13 March).

Bruce Norris won the award for Best New Play for Clybourne Park, which is currently running at the Wyndham’s Theatre in the West End. Directed by Dominic Cooke Artistic Director of the Royal Court, Clybourne Park played to critical acclaim and packed houses in September this year, breaking box office records at the Royal Court.

Michelle Terry picked up the prize for Best Supporting Actress for Tribes by Nina Raine. Michelle played Sylvia, the new girlfriend of Billy, a young deaf man, growing up in his fiercely intelligent and unconventional family.

Leon Baugh received the award for Best Theatre Choreographer for Sucker Punch by Roy Williams. Sucker Punch last summer was about what it was to be young and Black in the 1980s and saw the Royal Court Theatre transformed into a boxing ring, complete with ringside seating. For Leon, a dancer by profession, Sucker Punch was the first theatre piece he had ever choreographed.
