The Royal Court is the home of the English Stage Company Limited (ESC) and is the UK’s leading theatre dedicated to new writing.
Up to 16 plays a year are staged between two theatre spaces (the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs and the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs) at the Royal Court’s home on Sloane Square. Over 100,000 people visit the Royal Court every year and over 100,000 more see our work elsewhere, including transfers to the West End and New York, National and International touring, online projects and London residencies in Tottenham and Pimlico.
A significant amount of play development activity takes place year-round. This work aims to find and nurture the most talented new writers and develop the highest quality plays, for which the Royal Court is internationally renowned. There is an ongoing programme of writers’ attachments, readings, workshops and playwriting groups.
The Royal Court Theatre also has two commercial subsidiaries, Royal Court Theatre Productions Ltd (RCTP), which facilitates the transfer of Royal Court productions to the West End and ESC Catering Limited set up to run the catering operation at the theatre.

MAIN PURPOPSE
As part of a wider communication team, the Sales Manager will support the Head of Marketing and Sales in developing ticketing strategies that drive income and audience development and wider sales initiatives, including the development of the website, management of the bookshop, collaborations with the Bar and Kitchen and the Royal Court’s Friends Scheme.
The Sales and Ticketing Manager oversees a team consisting of the Box Office Manager and Bookshop Manager, taking a longer term analytical sales approach and supervising the Box Office Manager who will lead on the more day to day operational activities.
KEY RESPONSIBLITIES
- Working closely with Head of Marketing and Sales to develop strategies which meet organisational goals in terms of audience development and income
- Oversee the relationship with Spektrix and the continual development of the CRM System.
- Supporting the Head of Marketing and Sales on pricing strategies and initiatives, including offers and digital ticketing opportunities.
- Managing current and cultivating new relationships with third party ticket agents
- Overall responsibility for the management of the Bookshop and working with the Bookshop manager to maximise income including online and e-commerce opportunities
- Working with the Bar Manager to develop joint sales initiatives and deals.
- Working with the Development team to develop strategies to increase online membership sales and online donations via the CRM system
- Working with Head of Marketing and Sales on the continual development of the website – particularly focusing on user journey, e-commerce and analytics
- Working with the BO Manager on the set-up of shows and events
- Working with the BO Manager on the management of the box office infrastructure and equipment.
- Act as the first point of contact for all Jerwood Theatre Downstairs ticketing enquiries including management of house seats
- Chairing monthly Return on Investment meetings, analysing sales reports and reporting on audience data and trends to the wider team.
- Overseeing and developing the Friends scheme
- Leading on the development of and implementation of digital ticketing
- Developing the online shop and e-commerce in consultation with our web developers
General
- Integrating with all staff in the Communications department, building and maintaining productive working relationships with external agencies and suppliers
- Building and maintaining excellent relationships with writers, directors, casts and agents and with staff across the entire organisation.
- Undertaking any other duties as required by the Department
- Attending the weekly marketing, press and sales meeting, staff meeting, and other meetings as required
- Developing an awareness of news and best practice within the theatre industry and in ticketing in particular.
- Representing the Royal Court with diplomacy, discretion and courtesy at all times
- Adhering to the Royal Court’s health and safety and equal opportunities policies at all times
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND QUALITIES
- At least two years’ experience working in a similar role in an arts or ticketing organisation.
- Extensive experience using Spektrix to analyse and interpret data
- An analytical, commercial and strategic thinker who is able to see the bigger picture as well as managing the day to day.
- A professional and courteous attitude, with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people and stakeholders, with tact and discretion.
- Pro-active and self-motivated with the ability to prioritise and work effectively across a number of campaigns and tasks
- Previous experience of Line Management
- Meticulous attention to accuracy and detail
- Hard working with an ability to work supportively as part of a small team and equally across an organisation
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent organisational and admin skills
- Strong IT skills including advanced knowledge of Excel and database packages
- Understanding of the issues facing a contemporary arts organisation
- Knowledge of and interest in new writing and the Royal Court.
Terms & Conditions:-
Title of post: Sales and Ticketing Manager
Hours: 40 hours per week. Generally 10am – 6pm Monday – Friday
Some evening and occasional week end work will be required.
Salary: £28,000 per annum
Holiday entitlement: 20 days per year, plus 8 days for statutory holidays.
Rising to 25 days per year, plus 8 days for statutory holidays after 2 years’ service
Contract: Initial 18 months fixed term contract.
Notice period: 2 months
Pension: The Royal Court operates a contributory company pension scheme for all permanent employees. The company contribution is capped at 5% of basic salary. The employee is free to contribute at any level.
We also operate an alternative workplace pension scheme.
