SCRATCH PERFORMANCE OF OPEN CALL SUBMISSIONS ON THE THEME OF RESISTANCE

Published on Wed 22 Apr 2015

The Royal Court Theatre is to host an evening performance in the Bar, showcasing a selection of submissions to the GRIT project, based on themes of revolution and resistance.

As part of the Royal Court Theatre’s 2014 New Season Release, Artistic Director, Vicky Featherstone said:

“The time for apathy is over, the writers want to see and make change, to ask questions about our democracy. We didn’t set out to create a season of work with a theme but could not ignore the message coming from our playwrights. Individually they are asking the necessary questions of humanity, government and society and collectively they have made their response to the moment we are in very clear.

“All of these plays are about revolutions – big and small acts of resistance. They are provocative, diverse and timely. They are great stories, inventively told and demanding that we consider a better future.”

Something’s got under your skin. It’s niggling away. You need to do something about it. We’re listening…

GRIT was announced in December 2014 and is an open call to writers of all ages and experiences to submit a play about everyday resistance, revolution and defiance.
As a final celebration of our season of resistance, the Royal Court Theatre will present the work written by our audiences and online community from all over the world, which encapsulates this theme. Covering a variety of forms including theatre, poetry, short film, music and photography, the night will give a platform to the voices creating their own acts of defiance.

Hosted by a compere and performed as a rehearsed reading by members of the Royal Court Theatre front of house team, these performances will be accompanied by an open mic sign up on the night, asking writers and performers to present their scratch work.
The submission deadline for Grit has been extended until 6pm on 1st May, by which time all submissions, including those entries made since 8th December will be eligible for inclusion on the night.
