The Royal Court Nominated for Nine Evening Standard Theatre Awards
Published on Thu 10 Nov 2011The Royal Court has been shortlisted for nine Evening Standard Theatre Awards for the 2010 – 2011 season including two nominations each for Best Play (The Heretic by Richard Bean and Tribes by Nina Raine) and the Charles Wintour Award for Most Promising Playwright (E.V. Crowe for Kin and Penelope Skinner for The Village Bike).
This summer’s production of Arnold Wesker’s Chicken Soup with Barley receives nominations for Best Actress (Samantha Spiro) and Best Director (Dominic Cooke), while Lizzie Clachan is nominated for Best Design of Wastwater. Kyle Soller’s performance in The Faith Machine is recognised by a nomination for the Milton Shulman Award for Outstanding Newcomer. Phoebe Fox also receives a nomination in this category for her performance in The Acid Test.
The judging panel for the awards, chaired by Evening Standard Chairman Evgeny Lebedev, is composed of the Evening Standard’s deputy editor Sarah Sands as well as theatre critics Henry Hitchings (Evening Standard), Georgina Brown (Mail on Sunday), Susannah Clapp (Observer), Charles Spencer (The Daily Telegraph), Libby Purves (The Times) and Matt Wolf (International Herald Tribune).
An additional nomination goes to Jerusalem, originally produced at the Royal Court in 2009 and now playing at the Apollo Theatre, in the new category of “Best Night Out” voted by the public online.
The awards ceremony for the 57th Evening Standard Theatre Awards will take place on November 20th at the Savoy.
