Death and the Maiden is one of the most popular plays ever presented at the Royal Court. Set in post-dictatorship Chile, it explores the struggle for National renewal through the eyes of a victim of Pinochet’s regime. Originally produced in association with LIFT and the National Theatre Studio, it transferred to the Theatre Downstairs in November 1991 and then to the West End in February 1992. It won the 1992 Laurence Olivier award for Best New Play and has since been staged worldwide. In 1994, it was adapted into a film by Roman Polanski.
