A script-in-hand performance of Lucy Kirkwood’s Maryland at WOW – Women of the World Festival.
Maryland is an immediate, extraordinary, communal rallying cry in response to the normalising of horrific actions being committed against all women and victims of gendered violence.
Co-directed by Milli Bhatia, Vicky Featherstone and Lucy Morrison.
It was performed at the Royal Court Theatre over 3 weeks with a rolling cast of 50 actors and has been made available for people to stage their own readings around the country. So far, 122 have requested to do a reading of the play.
“This play was for many years a private conversation with myself. The horrific murders of Bibaa Henry and Nicole Smallman in 2020 and Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa this year have galvanised me into making it public. I hesitate to even call it a play when it is simply a howl, a way of expressing what I feel about a culture of violence against women, but I am sharing it because I wonder if it might express a little of what other people feel about it too.” Playwright Lucy Kirkwood
The performance is followed by a panel with members of the creative team.
This performance of Maryland is taking place at Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre.
