Protecting the playwright’s freedom of expression has always been a central value at the Royal Court. But what rights, responsibilities, protections, and parameters are appropriate, on and off stage – and who decides, especially when the things get tough?
This Playwrights’ Assembly is an open invitation for Writers’ Card members to help shape our thinking about approaches to political expression, protest and controversy in this current moment.
The lack of open dialogue around politics, protest, individual freedoms and reputational risks is a recurring theme at the heart of divides between artists and institutions. If you’re a Writers’ Card member who cares about this issue, this is your chance to join the conversation.
Hosted by the Royal Court’s leadership, the events are free to join, but spaces are limited. Over two hours, we’ll introduce provocations for discussion and share some of the challenging questions that we’re currently struggling with ourselves – to explore them together and shape the Court’s next steps.
Online or in person, we look forward to hearing what you have to say.
