When Jim Cartwright’s first play, Road, opened in the Theatre Upstairs, its writer, director and cast were all virtually unknown. This combined with its novel promenade staging and lack of narrative structure made the production a risk, yet it went on to meet huge success, transferring to the Theatre Downstairs in June 1986. It is now considered a classic of the period for its despairing snapshot of life in Thatcher’s Britain.
