There is no more important theatre in the world than the Royal Court. Its commitment to making theatre that is challenging and daring has defined and constantly reinvented the entire theatre ecology. There is a commitment to supporting writers at the heart of the work that is exceptional.
— Simon Stephens, Playwright in Residence
In 1956 George Devine founded the Royal Court, calling for a theatre where the experimentalists of the modern era may be seen, with hard-hitting, uncompromising writers creating work in advance of public taste. This mission is unchanged, and at the Royal Court the playwright remains the central artist, committed to making work that is provocative, searching, politically urgent and formally experimental. We need people who believe in this vision to join us, taking risks and creating theatre that is challenging, ambitious and looks to our collective futures.
— Vicky Featherstone, Artistic Director
