Royal Court Theatre and Kestrel Theatre Company announce Broken Dreams

Published on Mon 18 Jun 2018

The Royal Court Theatre and Kestrel Theatre Company will bring Broken Dreams to the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs 1pm Wednesday 1 August 2018 – 1pm Saturday 11 August 2018 following a special one-off performance in the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs to an invited audience last autumn. Broken Dreams is devised and performed by men from HMP Springhill, written with Simon Longman in collaboration with Kestrel Theatre Company. It is directed by Holly Race Roughan.

Kestrel Theatre Company employs professionals to work creatively within the criminal justice system, facilitating original pieces of work. The charity aims to empower people in prison by developing greater self-confidence, creativity and resilience and in doing so bring about lasting change. Broken Dreams is Kestrel’s second collaboration with the Royal Court Theatre following Blood and Water by men from HMP Springhill in 2016.

Kestrel Theatre Company’s work has helped to promote rehabilitation within HMP Springhill. Some participants have gained further employment in the arts on release while a number of former cast members have given testimony to the development of softer skills, helping them to secure employment.

Broken Dreams at the Royal Court marks the first time a group of serving prisoners released on licence will perform to the general public in a professional venue.
