Since 1997 dozens of plays, developed through our International Playwright’s Programme have been presented as full productions at the Royal Court and in co-productions abroad. Many of these international writers are now major artists in their own countries and have now been produced all over the world. These include Dea Loher, Marius Von Mayenburg (Germany); Juan Mayorga (Spain); Anupama Chandrasekhar, Abhishek Majumdar (India); Natal’ya Vorozhbit (Ukraine); Marcos Barbosa (Brazil); Vassily Sigarev (Russia). Most recently the Royal Court produced the acclaimed Fireworks by Dalia Taha (Palestine) and I See You by Mongiwekhaya (South Africa, in a co-production with the Market Theatre, Johannesburg.)
Other groundbreaking work produced by the International Department includes David Hare’s Via Dolorosa (1998) and My Name is Rachel Corrie, edited by Alan Rickman and Katharine Viner (2004).
There have also been sold out series of readings and short plays from Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, India, France, Georgia, Germany, Spain, Syria, Ukraine, South Africa, Nigeria, Uganda, Russia and seven countries across the Arab world.
The International Playwrights Programme is supported by the Genesis Foundation.
